Astaxanthin
INTRODUCTION
Astaxanthin is a lipid soluble pigment with а proven antioxidative properties. It is used as a nutritional supplement for human, in cosmetics and as a feed additive to impart coloration for salmon, crabs, shrimp and other aquatic organisms. A major source for the biotechnological production of astaxanthin is the green microalgae. The astaxanthin measurement is needed during the algae cultivation process as well as at astaxanthin extraction stage. A precise chromatographic method has been developed for astaxanthin quantification.
ABSTRACT
HPLC-UV determination of the lipid-soluble pigment astaxanthin on an ASTRA® C18-HE 3 µm column, 150 mm × 4.6 mm, part number AST-5732-IK46. Mobile phase ACN : MeOH 80/20 (v/v), isocratic elution, flow rate 1.0 mL/min, column temperature 23 °C, injection volume 5 µL, UV detection at 474 nm. Single analyte: 1. astaxanthin, CAS number 472-61-7. The note shows one chromatogram of the test solution on the ASTRA® C18-HE column, in which astaxanthin elutes as a single symmetrical peak at about 5.5 min on a clean baseline over a 13 min run, together with the structural formula of astaxanthin. No comparison with competitive columns is presented and no developing partner is named.
