Acetylsalicylic acid is very well-known as the drug Aspirin and is used to reduce pain and fever. It is also supplied under other brand names, such as Acylpyrin or Anopyrin. This application note shows the determination of impurity – salicyclic acid in the final product.
ABSTRACT
Determination of the salicylic acid impurity (CAS 69-72-7) in acetylsalicylic acid (CAS 50-78-2) on an ARION® Polar C18, 5 µm column (250 mm × 4.6 mm, ARI-5721-LM46). Isocratic proprietary elution with sodium 1-heptanesulfonate / acetonitrile and acetic acid at 2.0 ml/min and 25 °C, injection 10 µl, UV detection at 280 nm. Compared with a competitive C18 column (Competitor S), the ARION® Polar C18 gives longer retention and a wider gap between the impurity and the main peak.
