Xanax is an benzodiazepine alprazolam-based anxiolitic. Counterfeit Xanax may contain caffeine as a main component, as well as clonazolam and flualprazolam, both of which have a strong sedative effect, are able to cause amnesia, and belong to the group of new psychoactive drugs.
ABSTRACT
Analysis of a counterfeit Xanax sample for caffeine (CAS 58-08-2), clonazolam (CAS 33887-02-4) and flualprazolam (CAS 28910-91-0), with alprazolam (CAS 28981-97-7) as the reference active substance. The sample is run on two ASTRA® phases, C18-HE, 5 µm (AST-5732-LK46) and DM, 5 µm (AST-5810-LK46), both 150 mm × 4.6 mm. Gradient elution with A: H2O / 0.1 % HCOOH + 2 mM HCOONH4 and B: CH3CN / 0.1 % HCOOH at 1 ml/min and 20 °C, injection volume 10 µl, UV detection at 254 nm. Clonazolam and flualprazolam elute close together on C18-HE at about 7.5 minutes, while the DM phase shifts the pair to about 8.5 minutes and changes their spacing.
