Vitamin E and provitamin A in food supplements
INTRODUCTION
Beta-carotene is one of the group of carotenoids. It is a precursor of Vitamin A and plays a significant role as an antioxidant. Alpha-tocopherol is a type of Vitamin E. This application shows the separation of both compounds in a sample of a food supplement.
ABSTRACT
Determination of alpha-tocopherol / Vitamin E (CAS 59-02-9) and beta-carotene / Provitamin A (CAS 7235-40-7) in a food supplement tablet on an ASTRA® C18-HE, 5 µm column (100 mm × 4.6 mm, AST-5732-LI46). Isocratic elution with acetonitrile/methanol 70/30 (v/v) at 1.5 ml/min and 60 °C, injection volume 30 µl, UV/VIS detection at 284 nm (alpha-tocopherol) and 450 nm (beta-carotene). Both analytes are resolved within about 21 minutes.
